Breeding and Foaling

BWF Breeding and Foaling Services

Breeding and foaling mares safely requires preparedness, know-how, and patience — in addition to around-the-clock monitoring. Briarwood Farm is here to do the work for you so you can enjoy the experience.Selective breeding combined with proper mare and foal care is quite involved. Desirable results are far more likely with good planning, as any experienced breeder knows. We offer a breeding consultation to give you full confidence. We will advise you on which stallions, when bred to your mare, are likely to produce the best combination — and most importantly, a foal you can be proud of.Once a stallion is selected, we handle all the necessary paperwork, including stallion contracts and breeding certificates. We determine the optimal time for your mare to be bred and arrange either artificial insemination (AI) or live cover. For AI, we manage semen shipment and assist our veterinarian with insemination. Transportation for the mare is available if live cover is required. A post-breeding ultrasound is performed at 15 days, followed by ongoing pregnancy monitoring. For mares already in foal, we provide full monitoring on our farm. We supply a proper diet of high-quality hay and feed (adjusted as needed), routine worming, and necessary vaccinations. We use past history, udder development, pH testing, and calcium testing to help predict foaling time. Bedding is switched to straw as foaling approaches to prevent aspiration of wood shavings. Video and audio monitors let us watch the mares closely at all times. After foaling, a veterinarian performs a check on the foal the next day. The mare and foal are monitored closely for the first week. Small paddocks designed specifically for newborn foals and recovering mares are located right next to the stalls. We keep detailed records of feeding, worming, halter breaking, and all other care, which are provided when they return home. Your involvement is welcome throughout the entire process. For your comfort, our purpose-built foaling barn includes an air-conditioned mare-watch observation room overlooking the stalls. Mares and/or foals often return for weaning, with private or small-group turnout available. Inquire for Pricing

Important Requirements & Disclaimers
While approximately 90% of foalings are uneventful, mare owners must accept the inherent risks of breeding and foaling. Briarwood Farm and our veterinarian will do our very best to ensure an easy and successful outcome.
All veterinary bills must be guaranteed by the mare owner, and liability waivers must be signed. Proof of a negative Coggins test, along with up-to-date vaccination records, must be provided prior to arrival — zero exceptions. Mares will follow the Briarwood Farm worming schedule upon arrival.
